City of Royal Oak New Police Headquarters
The City of Royal Oak’s new Police Headquarters addresses the challenges posed by its outdated predecessor, built in 1964. After decades of service, the previous facility no longer met the needs of a modern police force due to limited space for advancing technologies, high renovation costs, and an inefficient layout that complicated secure prisoner transfers. The decision to construct a new, state-of-the-art headquarters reflects the city’s commitment to operational efficiency, safety, and community engagement.
Completed in February 2021, the 61,000-square-foot facility is strategically located adjacent to the existing District Court building to streamline operations. The design includes a secure patrol vehicle garage and a skybridge connecting the headquarters to the courthouse, ensuring efficient and safe prisoner transfers. The facility accommodates Dispatch and Communications, Criminal Investigations, Processing and Holding, Records and Evidence Processing, and Community and Training Room areas. Additionally, space for a future gun range was incorporated into the design, ensuring flexibility for future needs.
Key features of the new headquarters emphasize accessibility, functionality, and sustainability. The spacious lobby and wide entrances improve circulation for visitors and staff, while secure parking areas enhance officer safety and response times. Technological advancements and energy-efficient systems were integrated to create a modern, environmentally responsible facility.
The project balances the demands of a 21st-century police department with the city’s vision for community-focused law enforcement. With its cutting-edge design and thoughtful planning, the new Royal Oak Police Headquarters ensures that the department is well-equipped to serve the community now and in the future.
