Westview Elementary School

Westview Elementary School's innovative design has earned multiple national recognitions, including the "Impact on Learning Award", by reimagining how educational spaces can support modern teaching methods. The 98,500-square-foot facility organizes pre-K through fifth-grade classrooms into distinct learning communities, each with its own identity and central resource area. This pioneering approach, featured in 'Breaking the Mold of School Instruction and Organization,' creates intimate learning neighborhoods while enabling both large and small group instruction and distance learning capabilities.

A signature feature is the centrally-located outdoor classroom, strategically positioned near the main entrance to showcase experiential learning. This dynamic space includes a pond, teaching platforms, built-in seating, and butterfly and hummingbird gardens, providing hands-on opportunities for life sciences education. PARTNERS' commitment to sustainability is demonstrated through a closed-loop geothermal ground source heat pump system, delivering substantial energy savings.

The design thoughtfully integrates natural lighting, adaptable spaces, and simple organization to create an environment that supports exploration and discovery. Featured in multiple national publications including Metal Magazine and Learning By Design, the project demonstrates how educational architecture can balance current pedagogical needs with future adaptability while creating inspiring spaces that encourage both individual growth and collaborative learning. The school's success in fostering innovative education earned recognition from the National School Board Association and Michigan Association of School Boards."
