Where Wellness Meets Community: A Modernized Senior Center for Active Adults

The City of St. Clair Shores partnered with PARTNERS in Architecture to renovate and expand its Senior Activity Center, creating a modern and welcoming facility to better serve the community’s senior population. The project included a 3,100-square-foot addition, comprising a new Fitness Center and Vestibule, alongside comprehensive interior and exterior upgrades to enhance functionality and cohesion.

The new Fitness Center features showers, changing rooms, and spaces equipped with a variety of cardiovascular and strength training equipment. This addition encourages active lifestyles and promotes wellness among the center’s patrons. The project also reimagined the interior layout of the existing facility, incorporating an enlarged Gathering Area, an expanded Kitchen, and larger Administration Offices to accommodate the growing needs of staff and visitors. The design added flexible spaces, such as a Conference Room and two Healing Arts rooms, which can be adapted for various activities, ensuring the center supports a wide range of programs and events.

Exterior improvements were made to unify the building’s appearance, creating a cohesive aesthetic that reflects its importance as a community hub. Despite the challenges of renovating an occupied facility, the center continued to operate throughout construction, offering a full range of activities without disruption to its patrons.

This project underscores PARTNERS’ ability to transform community spaces into vibrant, functional environments. The updated Senior Activity Center stands as a testament to the city’s commitment to its residents, fostering health, connection, and engagement for years to come.
