Maybelle Burnette Library & Civic Center South

The new Maybelle Burnette Branch Library replaces an outdated facility originally built in the 1960s, delivering a modern, multi-functional space to serve the South Warren neighborhood. As part of a master-planned secondary Civic Center campus, the new library incorporates a satellite police station and a City Hall annex, significantly increasing services and resources available to the neighborhood.

The library is thoughtfully designed to accommodate the diverse needs of its patrons, with dedicated spaces for children, teens, and adults. These areas are equipped with abundant technological resources, including several computers, Wi-Fi access, and presentation equipment, ensuring the facility meets the demands of modern learning and engagement. The shared meeting and conference room, located near the auxiliary mayor’s office, provides a flexible space for both civic functions and community gatherings.

The site plan integrates the library into a broader vision for the area, featuring a park with trails, reading areas, an accessible playground, and provisions to accomodate a future fire station. This cohesive development enhances the neighborhood by promoting activity, connection, and safety. The satellite police station, housed in a secure wing of the building, provides additional stability and security to the surrounding area.

Architecturally, the building’s contemporary modern design employs a mix of materials, including block and brick, metal siding, and highly efficient windows. These elements, along with a standing seam metal roof, create a durable and visually striking structure. The development revitalizes the 9 Mile and Van Dyke intersection, reinforcing the city’s commitment to investing in the community’s growth and well-being.
